PlacidWay, a health & wellness tourism web portal, recently expanded its number of partnerships with healthcare providers abroad, following a company directive to increase its offerings to health tourism consumers. Previously, the site has attracted partnerships from healthcare providers in India, Thailand, Malaysia, Argentina, Panama, South Africa and Poland. Recent additions include providers based in Brazil, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Mexico, Guatemala, Singapore, Norway, South Korea, Hungary, United States, and Croatia.
Attention to the needs of both sides of the health tourism coin—consumers and healthcare providers—has been a differentiator for the web portal. “Our partnership with PlacidWay has resulted in an increased interest in our facility by health tourists” said Dr. Ismael Naypa of Yanhee International Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. “PlacidWay has worked with us to ensure that we had all the knowledge, resources and tools needed to attract new clients.”
As healthcare providers around the world realize the advantages of marketing on a global basis, they have turned to PlacidWay to establish their brand and gain greater visibility. “We recently identified health tourism as a key strategy for expanding our client base” said Abhik Moitra of Artemis Health Institute in India. “By partnering with PlacidWay, we have stepped out into the world arena and have become more competitively and prominently marketed.”
Health tourism is a centuries-old industry that has recently experienced explosive growth, and one that continues to grow as rising healthcare costs, overburdened public healthcare systems, increased interest in alternative/holistic medicine and less expensive procedures abroad prompt health and wellness seekers to travel beyond their backyard for more affordable options.
“PlacidWay has become a leading authority in the field of health tourism through its vision, commitment to service and determination to be the most complete resource possible” said Pramod Goel, President of PlacidWay. “We offer world class healthcare providers in exotic destinations, a formidable knowledge and information base, quick response turnaround and a one-stop approach to booking a health tourism experience.”

Liposuction is a type of cosmetic surgery designed to help remove excess fat deposits from certain areas of the body. Women are more apt to consider liposuction than men, as it helps to improve proportion, body contours, and most importantly, self-image and confidence. Liposuction is also known as lipoplasty and can be performed on an outpatient basis.
Who Benefits from Liposuction?
Many people, especially those heading toward middle-age, benefit from liposuction treatments that help to rid the body of excess pockets of fat that accumulate around the hips, abdomen, arms and buttocks. Rather than being used as a weight control or fitness method, liposuction addresses genetic traits toward excess fat deposits, and is often combined with other plastic surgery techniques such as a tummy tuck, breast reduction, or facelift procedures.
Patients considering liposuction should be aware that it is not considered a treatment for obesity or as a replacement for nutritious diets and adequate exercise. Liposuction will not remove cellulite or saggy skin. For optimal success of liposuction procedures, the best candidates are healthy men and women who are in generally good physical condition, and especially those within 30% of their ideal weight. Individuals who suffer from medical conditions or life-threatening illnesses are not good candidates for this procedure.

Unless an adequate treatment is undertaken, this process of constant qualitative-quantitative deterioration inexorably ends up in baldness. Cosmetic surgery has enjoyed a long and illustrious history not only in the United States but also around the world. Recently, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons released results surrounding the rising numbers of individuals choosing cosmetic surgical procedures since the year 2000. Everything from breast lifts to Botox to tummy tucks, cosmetic surgical procedures are growing in popularity around the world. Medical tourists are able to enjoy a wide selection of minimally invasive, surgical, and reconstructive cosmetic surgical procedures in the future as trends continue to attract the attention of baby boomers, all socioeconomic demographics and genders both domestically and abroad.
Top Five Cosmetic Surgical Procedures
While techniques and methods used in a variety of cosmetic procedures are continually advancing, 2008 saw a large increase in injectable and noninvasive treatments such as Botox, as well as breast augmentation procedures. Studies have shown that over 10 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed in the year 2005 alone, a nearly 40% increase since the turn of the new century. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the global market now exceeds $30 billion, with a sustainable compound annual growth rate in the range of 25%.
According to recent statistics, the top trends in cosmetic surgery include:
- Breast augmentation
- Breast lift
- Dermabrasion
- Tummy tuck
- Botox treatments
- Laser skin resurfacing
Who Is Having Plastic Surgery?
The trend seems to be showing a desire to minimalize and reduce the effects of aging, and this desire does not seem to be limited to baby boomers. Individuals as young as 25 and 30 years old are engaging in minimally invasive cosmetic procedures such as Botox and laser skin resurfacing as well as dermabrasion.

Have you ever traveled faraway to an exotic land? Have you marveled at their geography, their culture or way of life? Countries such as Thailand, India, South Africa, Poland, and even Costa Rica & Croatia have hidden treasures of which you may not be aware – treasures that once discovered can change your life and your health forever. This is why Health & Wellness Tourism (or Medical Tourism) is becoming one of the fastest growing industries of the decade. The dual experiences of addressing the needs of your body, mind and soul in locations that offer the lure of foreign and mysterious locales is irresistible. Add lower costs for procedures, cutting edge technology and physicians of the highest caliber, and a healthy, new you is just a plane ticket away.
Some may believe that going outside of the United States for surgeries is risky business, but did you know that many of the most technologically advanced medical centers are located outside of the United States? The growing trend of attracting international patients around the world has evened the playing field, so to speak, and patients around the world have more choices when it comes to choosing surgeons and physicians to treat them and their conditions. Especially in the medical field, borders are dissolving.
People are traveling out of country and even to places within their own country to seek both modern and alternative health services. Places like Singapore, Thailand and India (famous for all surgeries such as orthopedics, heart, cosmetic), Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Costa Rica and South Africa (cosmetic and dental) use modern technologies and procedures while offering world class treatment for less money. This is because in places such as the United States, doctors have to pay such outrageous rent, medical insurance and licensing fees that they have to hike up their prices just to make ends meet. In other countries the cost for these items is much less and therefore doctors can charge less for their procedures.
For example, a heart surgery requiring the replacement of one or more heart valves costs around $200,000 in the United States. The same procedure is performed for under $15,000 in India or Malaysia–that cost includes the services of a highly skilled and trained heart specialist, transportation and accommodation fees and a few extra days to enjoy the sites of your planned vacation as well. Other procedures follow suit. Facelifts can cost $20,000 in the U.S. but are available in other global destinations for around $2,500. Dental bridges cost around $5,500 in the U.S. but only around $200 in India. The list goes on.

Ayurveda – the Complete Medical Science
Ayurveda implies the science of life. It recommends the measures that have to be adopted in routine life style as well as the treatment procedures for diseases. It is a science with its base on the Tridosha principle. Doshas are the representation/generalisation of the biological functions of human body. Both health and disease are based on the balance or imbalance of these doshas.
These variations in the doshas are brought about by various factors of food and other regimen, environment, climate etc. Its a common day experience to find the role of food, food pattern in the formation or mitigation of ailment. How this can be elicited will be detailed further. It can be thought about to a good extent that we are what we eat. There are clear cut and vivid detailing of the remedial measures to bring vitiated dosha to normality / balance by Sodhana (purifying therapy) and samana (curative therapy).
The uniqueness of Ayurveda is Rasayana (Rejuvenation therapy) which aims at increasing the longevity of a person by improving the functions of the Saptadhatus (the seven structural units of the body). This has profound importance in immunity status enhancement of a person and also in the cure of severely ill patients generally incurable diseases. Kerala Ayurveda doctors specialise in this aspect.
The theoratical and practical framework of Ayurveda is wide enough to include all that is essential to make a man healthy and happy. It includes the study of right conduct (dharma), which is necessary for the healthy growth of society in which the man lives. Further it deals with the philosophical aspect of life, the knowledge of which contributes greatly to the comfort and happiness of all human beings. Ayurveda philosophically understands the limitation of human efforts. Still it talks about the means of prolonging life and the methods of invigorating it.
The objectives of Ayurveda are mainly two, the first being the maintenance of positive health -that is preventive healthcare and the other – treatment of diseases i.e. curative healthcare. These clearly defined objectives are achieved through logically developed means in a classical way. On the basis of objectives defined, the sum and substance of Ayurveda can be classified into two parts;

– Jul 27, 2008 – British pensioner gets two new knees via replacement surgery in India.
Mr. Kenneth Perris, a pensioner from Welwyn Garden city, Hertfordshire, UK is overjoyed with his double full bending knee replacements in India. The 81 year old Ex British Rail employee and World war veteran underwent successful surgery by Dr. A.K.Venkatachalam in India at the spanking Chettinad health city hospitals near Chennai.
Hailing from Liverpool, Kenneth now lives in Welwyn garden city with his adoring wife after retiring from British rail. He has suffered from knee pains since long due to bow legs.
He had been placed on a British waiting list for knee replacements for the last couple of years. This year, after turning 81, he felt that he deserved better and wanted to enjoy a better quality of life. He was not keen on surgery in NHS hospitals. His daughter located a Knee surgeon in Chennai on the internet in her search for “Knee replacement surgery in India”.
The family checked out the surgeon’s credentials from a former patient in nearby Luton. The knee operations were performed under regional anesthesia 4 days apart. Exactly a week after his admission in the hospital, Mr. Perris is able to walk without any support after bilateral knee replacements.

Gurgaon, August 2, 2008: Dr. Harshavardhan Hegde, Consultant and Head, Department of Orthopedics and Spine Surgery at Artemis Health Institute, Gurgaon performed a 4 level disc replacement surgery on a 54 year American patient. Dr. Hegde in an 8 hour long surgery replaced two lumbar discs (lower back) and two cervical discs (neck).
The patient was suffering from disc degeneration for the last 10 years and when he came to know about Dr Harshvardhan Hegde from a patient who had been treated by him earlier. One option was to have a fusion surgery and the other was to have disc replacement surgery which is more complicated but has a faster recovery. He chose the latter. The patient was walking on the first postoperative day and is hoping to be discharged from the hospital in five days. The cost for the surgery in India too was a big relief for him. It cost him USD 25,000 US dollars for a 4 level disc replacement at Artemis Health Institute, while in America he was given a budget of around 2,50,000 US dollars.
Cervical disc replacement is a procedure where an artificial cervical disc is inserted between two cervical vertebrae after an intervertebral disc has been surgically removed in the process of decompressing the spinal cord or/and a nerve root. The intent of the device is to preserve motion at the disc space. It is an alternative to the use of bone grafts, plates and screws in pursuit of a fusion following such a disc removal, which necessarily eliminates motion at the operated disc space in the neck.
Lumbar disc replacement is a procedure where an artificial disc is inserted between two lumbar vertebrae after an intervertebral disc has been surgically removed in the process of decompressing the spinal cord or/and a nerve root. The intent of the device is to preserve motion at the disc space. It is an alternative to the use of bone grafts, plates and screws in pursuit of a fusion following such a disc removal, which necessarily eliminates motion at the operated disc space in the neck.
