From Argentina to Thailand, countries have benefited from the growth in travel for medical procedures and the business is set to expand in the Middle East, according to leading industry observers.
“As global healthcare choices expand, patients are travelling across the world to seek medical treatment,” said Ayana Everett, Conference Producer of the first Healthcare Travel and Exhibition Congress taking place at Al Bustan Rotana Hotel, Dubai, from 2-4 November 2008. “Internationally, healthcare travel is expected to become a $40 billion industry by 2010,” Everett added.
“Going abroad for elective or necessary procedures is taking off and countries such as Jordan and Lebanon are already benefitting. With a population predominantly made up of expatriates, the United Arab Emirates has always been a major market for the medical travel business. Now the UAE has embarked on ambitious plans to make the emirates a major inbound destination for medical travel.”
The UAE and other countries are hoping to emulate the success of places such as Singapore. In 2006, some 410,000 patients travelled to Singapore for healthcare and from 2012 hopes to attract one million medical travellers annually.
Based entirely around private businesses, global medical travel is a fiercely competitive market and substantial sums of money have been invested throughout the world. Healthcare travel is not only a matter of individual patients. Employers, insurance companies and governments are integral parts of the equation as well.
“The global economic downturn is expected to impact medical travel, as with all industries,” Everett added. “The challenge is for providers, brokers and insurance companies to help customers on budgets to ensure they remain well-covered internationally at a competitive price. Providers who can manage that balancing act will have a competitive edge.”

Mrs. Margaret Mckenzie, a nurse from Grass Valley, California, made a trip to Guatemala. She contacted a company named, Angels Abroad, and through them, contacted Dr. Rodrigo Gonzalez Toledo, a bariatric surgeon trained in the US. She had an open gastric bypass on September 6th 2008, at Las Americas Hospital in Guatemala city.
What is interesting about this story is that, Mrs. Mckenzie has a health insurance, and they can cover a gastric bypass. The problem is that she didn’t had enough money to pay a co-payment and deductible. Co-payment was US $24,000.
It was cheaper to pay an air ticket to go to Guatemala, plus, ground transportation, cell phone, concierge service, meals, hotel, all medical expenses including 4 nights at a 5-star hospital, nurse service, a tour to a tourist attraction and she paid for her companion expenses. All these was less expensive than using her own health insurance. She saved US $10,000.
Due to her weight loss, Mrs. Mckenzie is going to be able to have a better life.
With tears in her eyes, she told that if she had surgery in the US, she probably had to mortgage, for second time, her house. This is a reality americans are considering, to travel abroad to have invasive surgeries, not just cosmetic. Though it is a hard decision to travel to a called “third world country”, and find physicians trained in the US, using state of the art technology, it is becoming necessary, for americans to survive and not loose all of their money in the process.

Year after year, breast cancer is on the mind of women — and with good reason.
According to Cancer Research U.K., the incidence of breast cancer has more than doubled since 1975, with 1.1 million new cases diagnosed annually across the world.
A personalized plan for breast health is one of the most important tools you can have to prevent cancer. Sanoviv is now offering just that: The remarkably successful Breast Health and Wellness Program.
Women of all ages can benefit by participating in the Breast Health and Wellness Program, but it is especially important for those who have a family history of breast disease. Early detection of subtle abnormalities sounds an alarm that can be addressed through lifestyle changes, lymphatic exercises, specific nutrients and better nutrition.
Expert hands caring for you . . .
The Breast Health and Wellness Program is administered by a team of highly-trained professionals under the direction and coordination of an experienced medical board. As a holistic medical institute, Sanoviv combines expert personnel, state-of-the-art diagnostics, luxurious surroundings, fabulous food, educational programs and a relaxed environment for total wellness.
The Breast Thermogram
Sanoviv’s four-day Breast Health and Wellness Program is designed to help you avoid illness and heal abnormal cells. The cornerstone of the program is a scan of the breasts, commonly referred to as a thermogram. An ultra-sensitive infrared camera obtains high-resolution images without pain, compression or radiation. A 12-page report is generated by trained clinicians who use a sophisticated computer program that can identify abnormal blood vessel patterns and subtle temperature differences within the breasts. Small, but important, changes can be detected up to 7 years before they can be identified with any other currently available technology, creating an opportunity to intervene for restoration of health.

WHAT HAVE THEY DISCOVERED?
Their research has found that heart-like cells generated from an adult’s own stem cells using the National Heart Centre’s (NHC) patented method, have contributed to increasing the pumping force of the heart.
This is important for a patient with heart failure as the condition causes the heart to pump less forcefully and can lead to breathlessness, fatigue and weakness.
Dr Philip Wong, a senior consultant in the department of cardiology at NHC, and director of its research and development unit, said: ‘We took stem cells from 43 heart failure patients, put them in a petri dish, developed a solution that primes these cells to change into heart-like cells.’
The stem cells were transplanted into rat hearts during the research process.
DID IT WORK?
Their study found that in 100 of these cells, 30 of them will convert into heart-like cells.
Dr Wong: ‘Heart-like cells are better than other stem cells in helping to improve heart function.
‘Once they have converted, they feel at home and they know where to go in the areas of the heart that require them.’
If it were unconverted stem cells, they tend to get distributed all over and they are not effective in helping to improve the heart function, he said.
WHO WILL IT HELP?
Heart failure patients.
Many heart-attack patients suffer irreversible injury to the heart, leading to heart failure and its symptoms.
Dr Wong said there are 500 new heart failure patients in Singapore every year.
‘For patients with severely damaged hearts, whole organ heart transplant is sometimes the only hope, but the challenge lies in finding a donor,’ he said.
‘For many of these patients, doctors use treatments such as stents, ballooning, bypass, but they end up still having heart-failure symptoms.’

Small incisions are made to insert implants, which are placed under the pectoral muscles. Results to this type of surgery are immediate and offer patients greater pleasure in their appearance and self-confidence.
- Facelift – Tighten the skin of the face and neck, offering an immediately younger and more youthful appearance. “Mini-lifts” and full facelifts employ exact techniques that create a natural looking appearance that produces little scarring.
